He was drowning in pain — and somehow turned it into some of the most beautiful art ever created.

Vincent van Gogh’s life was marked by profound emotional struggles, physical health problems, and periods of intense uncertainty. Although the exact nature of his illnesses remains debated, his story continues to fascinate artists and audiences around the world.

In 1888, following a violent argument with Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh mutilated part of his left ear. Later, he voluntarily entered the Saint-Rémy asylum, where he continued to create some of his most celebrated works.

Among them was The Starry Night — a painting that transformed a turbulent night sky into an extraordinary composition of swirling forms, luminous stars, and expressive color.

This project explores Van Gogh’s story through a cinematic documentary-style motion graphics experience.

Combining archival-inspired imagery, expressive typography, animated brushstrokes, and atmospheric transitions, the animation takes viewers through the artist’s struggles and into the visual world of his paintings.

Every scene is designed to serve the narrative. From fragmented compositions that reflect emotional turmoil to flowing movements inspired by his distinctive brushwork, the visual language draws a connection between the artist’s life and his enduring creative legacy.

The result is a storytelling experience that blends art history with modern motion design.

Because great storytelling isn’t simply about showing what happened.

It’s about making people feel the story.

Project Concept:

What happens when an artist’s personal struggles become part of the story the world remembers?

This project explores the life of Vincent van Gogh through a cinematic motion graphics approach that connects historical events with the expressive qualities of his artwork.

Beginning with his struggles and the events surrounding his time in Arles, the narrative moves toward his voluntary admission to the Saint-Rémy asylum and the creation of The Starry Night.

The visual direction combines archival-inspired imagery, painterly animation, atmospheric compositions, and editorial typography to create a documentary experience that feels both intimate and visually powerful.

The goal is to make art history feel alive — not simply by displaying famous paintings, but by building a visual narrative around the person behind them.

Every great edit has a structure.
