Fake cocaine sent him to the hospital.

And the FBI seized the movie’s profits.

The Wolf of Wall Street.

This motion design project explores the bizarre real-world story surrounding one of the most infamous financial films ever made.

To portray Donnie Azoff, Jonah Hill spent months performing scenes involving fake cocaine made from crushed Vitamin B tablets. The repeated use of the substance during filming reportedly contributed to severe bronchitis that eventually required hospitalization.

But the story behind the movie gets even stranger.

The Wolf of Wall Street tells the story of financial fraud, corruption, and illegally obtained wealth.

And the film itself became connected to a real-world financial scandal.

The production was partly financed through money linked to 1MDB, Malaysia’s state investment fund. The U.S. Department of Justice later pursued the recovery of assets allegedly purchased with funds misappropriated from the fund, including interests connected to the film.

A movie about illegal money…

connected to money alleged to have been illegally obtained.

This project transforms that unusual Hollywood story into a fast-paced documentary-style motion graphics experience.

The animation combines cinematic movie imagery, financial documents, money visualizations, FBI investigation graphics, bold typography, and dramatic transitions to connect the film’s fictional story with the real events surrounding its production.

The narrative begins with Jonah Hill’s unusual filming experience before gradually revealing the much larger financial story behind the movie.

The result is a visual story built around one strange question:

A movie about illegal money, connected to illegally obtained money.

Coincidence… or the ultimate crime?

Project Concept:

Hollywood loves stories about money.

But sometimes…

the story behind the movie is almost as interesting as the movie itself.

Jonah Hill was playing a character surrounded by drugs, excess, and chaos.

The cocaine was fake.

But repeatedly performing the scenes with the fake substance reportedly contributed to serious illness.

Then there’s the money.

The Wolf of Wall Street tells a story about financial crime while its production became entangled in the real-world 1MDB scandal and subsequent asset-recovery efforts.

Two completely different stories.

One movie.

And one bizarre connection between them.

The film was supposed to be about people who made fortunes through illegal financial schemes.

But behind the scenes, its own financing became part of a much larger financial investigation.

A movie about illegal money…

with a real money scandal behind it.

Coincidence… or the ultimate crime?
